American Progressive Death Metal band, ÆNIGMATUM recently released its third album, Infinitude’s Passage, through 20 Buck Spin. The cover illustration was crafted by Daniel Hermosilla of Nox Fragor Art. Below, the Chilean artist and the group's vocalist/guitarist, Kelly McLaughlin, talk about this cryptic graphic.
What inspired the cover concept for "Infinitude's Passage"?
Daniel Hermosilla: To be honest, it was a fairly intuitive project, unlike anything I'd done in years. The band gave me some general concepts representing part of the historical, psychic, physical, and metaphysical development of how we have constituted ourselves as a species in relation to the hidden origin of what we understand as "reality." Some of these topics were somewhat unfamiliar to me, so I proceeded to educate myself in order to create symbolism. Otherwise, engraving the gravestones emanating the plasma that materializes and dematerializes us in a cyclical process that reconciles our micro and macrocosm was merely an aesthetic device.
How did Daniel Hermosilla become involved this project?
Kelly McLaughlin: We got in contact with Daniel through our friend Cristóbal González from [Death Metal band] Inanna. We loved the work he did for their album "Void Of Unending Depths" so thought he would capture perfectly what we wanted. After just a few conversations about thematics and imagery he started sending us pictures with paint on canvas, so we were very thankful and relieved for his work ethic and execution.

Can you talk about the creative process?
Daniel Hermosilla: This work is done in acrylic on a 60 x 60 Cm canvas frame, mixing a range of cool and warm tones, creating this duality between the figurative and the accidental and abstract to construct this duality to which we refer.
Kelly McLaughlin: After listening to the tracks, he created a sigil for each song on the album, and you will find them not only on the cover art, but throughout the layout.
The cover also includes ÆNIGMATUM's logo, which is credited to Logan Williams/Connie Wang. Can you tell us about its origins?
Kelly McLaughlin: The original logo was drafted by our drummer Pierce's brother, Logan, back in 2017 if I'm not mistaken. There was a lot of back and forth to achieve that since it's so difficult to first off decide what you want and then to communicate that effectively to the artist. So, it was sort of trial and error essentially. Recently, we decided it was time for a revamp since we all felt we were entering a new phase of the band. And for that we hired our friend, Connie Wang, who painted our first album's cover. The goal was to give it some reconstructive surgery so to speak, without doing a total redraw. So, the first and last letter were ultimately kept the same, and the middle letters were redone.
